The larger photos both top and the bottom are haunting because this is what actually was happening. Yet, In 1940 when Charlie Chaplin made this film, the unimaginable had not yet been fully realized, that would not come till the end of the war in 1945.
In his autobiography released in 1964 he said:
Had I known of the actual horrors of the German concentration camps, I could not have made The Great Dictator, I could not have made fun of the homicidal insanity of the Nazis
